This lecture is intended for anyone who works with children. It draws on over 30 years of working with at-risk students. This presentation intertwines research, personal experience and poetry and attempts to highlight the importance we all carry within.

Title: Building a School-wide Literacy Climate

Join Arizona’s National Distinguished Principal (1997) for this multi-media presentation as he explains how to build a dynamic classroom and to organize a powerful, school-wide literacy program. Ganado Primary School is a public school located on the Navajo Reservation and in one of the poorest counties in America; come and hear how this school turned adversity into opportunity and led to the school’s being named the Number One School in Arizona, 1995 and a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence.

Overview:
This presentation will present an overview of Ganado Primary School, the Number One School in Arizona 1995 and a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence (1997). The presentation will include a 9 minute video of the school conception and a 40 minute slide presentation which highlights the major programs within the school.

I have studied and used journals for the past 25 years. Teachers have a limited understanding of how to use and vary their use within the classroom. In the process teachers and their students often report suffer "journal burnout."

Title: Language Literacy Strategies For the Classroom (all day)

Course Description: This course will expose students to the reading and writing process and will provide participants with theory and practice. During the course participants will gain insights into the ways that journals can be used to enhance learning. The participants will be exposed to alternative strategies for teaching the basic skills in meaningful ways.

Objective(s) to be accomplished
Participants will be able to:
1. name 25 different journals and to discuss their application to their classrooms,
2. discuss the complementary roles of reading and writing in the literacy process, and
3. discuss a variety of projects and activities which enhance the reading and writing connection.

Activities
Participants will:
1. view videos which provide insights into the reading and writing connection,
2. brainstorm ideas and participate in activities, and
3. review the concepts included within the book, From Daybooks to Night Logs: journeying with Journals.

Title: Writing Poetry with Children Grades: 1-8

Afraid to play with poetry? Join poet and educator Sigmund A. Boloz as he demonstrates ideas for generating and improving your own and your students’ poetry. The author of ten books of poetry, Mr. Boloz will examine the ingredients of a success poetry workshop and demonstrate collaborative poetry writing techniques. After you leave this session, you will want to dive into poetry.

Activities:
The participants will:
1. participate in discussions regarding poetry environments,
2. view and discuss collaborative poetry generated by students,
3. participate in a collaborative poetry session.

This session is intended for teachers and support staff who work with writers. It draws on over 25 years of working with children and as a writer. This presentation intertwines research, personal experience, poetry and attempts to highlight the importance of the teacher as a facilitator, a decision maker and as a language model. A collaborative poetry model will be modeled.
